Agriculture Program
NEED
Severely impoverished families are obliged to give up their children and place them in orphanages to avoid starvation. Through our Child Welfare Program we have identified that only three children in our Program are NOT suffering from malnourishment. For most families, there is usually not enough food to feed all members every day. With the increasing closure of the brick factories, this situation will become severely exacerbated.SCOPE
Many families have a few meters of land which could be cultivated to grow their own fruit and vegetables. The cost of buying the seeds and fertilizers is prohibitive. We would like to begin growing our own food around the schools to give fruit and vegetables to our pupils as well as providing an example to the community to encourage them to do the same. Fruit and vegetables would also help address the serious lack of basic vitamins, essential to the growth and development of the children.EXPANSION
To meet the community's thirst for knowledge, we would like to expand the library and purchase a copy of each text book for each subject for each class. This will allow photocopying for those who cannot afford to buy books for their children, which is one of the main reasons preventing children to attend school. We would also like to be able to show educational DVDs to the whole community. We have already used this method as part of the Educational Programs we run with great success. We believe that this will also contribute towards the creation of a community spirit.
