Community Support

We urgently need funding to enable us to continue our Programs. All the money we raise goes directly to the charity's beneficiaries. No salaries or expenses are paid to administrators only local staff receive a salary.

NEED

  • In the villages of Lam Asan, Lampineung, Lam Gapang, Lambui and Kleng, there are no community facilities or activities other than those surrounding their religion. Community spirit has been decimated by 30 years' of internal conflict, followed by the tsunami. The enthusiasm of the children attending the Education Programs, and the tangible results this has had on their learning capabilities as well as their outlook for the future, has had the result of inspiring the community to interact and work together. Such of the adults in the villages who are literate are now seen reading aloud to groups, which then discuss the book and look at the pictures together. A community spirit has been born and we are keen to help this grow.
  • The district of Aceh Besar was one of the worse hit by the Tsunami, prior to which it suffered from 30 years of internal conflict. Many of the men in the area have been killed and families separated. Most of the local businesses, farms and livelihoods were destroyed by the tsunami. The villages in the region now rely almost exclusively on the local brick factories for employment, where women work in dire conditions for which they are paid €1.30 a day. The factories are closing at an alarming rate which is causing widespread unemployment and already resulting in entire families being left with no income at all.
  • Severely impoverished families are obliged to give up their children and place them in orphanages to avoid starvation. Through our Child Welfare Program we have identified that only three children in our Program are NOT suffering from malnourishment. For most families, there is usually not enough food to feed all members every day. With the increasing closure of the brick factories, this situation will become severely exacerbated.
